bulletSouth Australia's Strategic Plan
An update of South Australia's Strategic Plan was released on 24 January 2007 - see media release.

Under Objective 5, Building Communities, South Australia's Strategic Plan includes the target of increasing voter participation in Local Government elections in South Australia to 50% by the 2014 Local Government elections.

On 20 April 2007, the then Minister for State/Local Government Relations, the Hon Jennifer Rankine MP and the then President of the Local Government Association, Councillor John Rich, jointly commissioned an Independent Review of Local Government Elections.

The Final Report of the Independent Review was officially released on 11 March 2008 by the Minister for State/Local Government Relations and the President of the LGA. Information about the Review can be accessed at the Independent Review of Local Government Elections website.

Local Government elections are held every four years by voluntary postal ballot. The next general Local Government elections are scheduled for November 2010.

The purpose of the Consultation Flowchart - Legislative Proposals is to provide a communication and consultation guide to the State Government and Local Government during the development of legislative proposals that have a significant impact on Local Government.

bulletState-Local Government Relations Agreement
The South Australian Government and the Local Government Association have made an agreement to improve consultation arrangements, communication practices and to build a closer, more productive and collaborative working relationship between State and Local Government.

The State-Local Government Relations Agreement is an initiative of the Minister's State/Local Government Forum, an initiative of the South Australian Government.

The Agreement is presented in two parts. The first part is the overarching statement on the working relations between State and Local Government that sets out the principles and protocols for the relations. The second part is an appended schedule of agreed priorities.

The State-Local Government Relations Agreement 2006 was signed by the Premier and the President of the LGA on 21 November 2006.

The Schedule of Priorities for 2007-08 was signed by the Premier and the President of the LGA on 14 January 2008. 

Annual Reviews 
The State-Local Government Relations Agreement is reviewed annually.

bullet National Intergovernmental Agreement
On 12 April 2006 a national Intergovernmental Agreement Establishing Principles Guiding Intergovernmental Relations on Local Government Matters (IGA) was signed by the Federal Minister for Local Government, State and Territory Ministers for Local Government and the President of the Australian Local Government Association on behalf of all State Local Government Associations.

The IGA is designed to enable all three spheres of government to work together for the benefit of communities.

First signed on 8 March 2004, the second annual review of the State-Local Government Relations Agreement in 2006 revised South Australia's Agreement to reflect the national Intergovernmental Agreement.


bullet Archived Projects
Other projects that the Office for State/Local Government Relations has been involved with include the State/Local Government Partnerships Program, the Roads Infrastructure Database Project, a joint project with the Local Government Association investigating rate setting improvement opportunities, Indigenous initiatives and work on progressing targets under South Australia's Strategic Plan 2004.
